What does Egg Roll in a Bowl mean?
Egg roll in a Bowl, also known as crack slaw,’ is an Asian dish transformed into Keto. High-carb egg rolls have been turned into a low-carb extra tasty dish that might be more favorable than the original. This recipe has a stir fry made from cabbage, ground pork, and sesame oil as a basis. It is a super basic recipe that can be completed in less than 30 minutes.
Are The Egg Roll Wrappers Keto-related?
This low-carb egg roll omits the conventional wonton wrappers that are not low-carb (4-8g of carbohydrates per wrapper). That’s just one wrapper. Imagine eating three or four of them. You will have hit the net carb cap for the day before you knew it. Egg roll wrappers are often made mainly of wheat. It contains very little egg, but mostly wheat, making them unsuitable for a diet like Keto, which is low inflammation.
This is the reason for the keto egg roll-in-a-bowl recipe. It brings you lots of Asian flavors and a range of textures without carbohydrates. Trust us, and you won’t even lose this wrapper for this keto recipe.
Wondering if your egg rolls have an egg?
Egg rolls do not necessarily contain eggs, but egg roll wrappers do. A batter was initially made with eggs and baked like wrappers in a very thin crepe. The cabbage and meat filling will be covered with these mostly egg-based wrappers. This is where the name of the egg roll initially emerged from.
However, we love to place eggs in a bowl on top of our egg roll because it adds extra flavor and an excellent crispy feel. To hold you fuller for longer, we attempt to render our keto recipes with generous serving sizes. Eggs are super satiating and a perfect way to bump up the satiety aspect of this meal.
What protein to choose?
The protein that you use is up to you in this simple egg roll dish. Some love ground chicken, and some love ground beef. The keynote is that there might be a few extra ingredients needed for any protein you want. Ground beef and ground pork are juicy meats that will make the dish moist. Though, lean proteins such as ground turkey appear to dry out, so you may want to add some additional sesame oil or olive oil to the mix. You should also add a few extra coconut amino or a splash of rice wine vinegar for moisture if you are not concerned about the net carbs.
What protein options do you have?
Again, this is entirely up to you. If you would like to make the perfect meal, change your proteins accordingly. A few of our suggestions are:
- Ground Pork
- Ground Beef
- Ground Turkey
- Ground Chicken
- Seasoned and Fried Salmon Fillet
We used ground pork for this recipe because we thought it offered the best texture and taste all around.
Pro-Tips to make Keto-friendly egg roll
This recipe allows the ideal basis to add whatever proteins you want, with lots of potential keto combos. To make one of our all-time favorite Keto dinner meals flawless at all times, follow these instructions.
Use of garlic and ginger
The main components for which this dish gets its Asian taste are garlic and ginger. We still suggest using fresh garlic and fresh ginger if possible, but powdered versions also work.
The right coleslaw mix might add that extra zing
For this dish, most supermarkets offer pre-made coleslaw mix which is just the right mix you need. These usually have various varieties of cabbage and a few other vegetables (usually carrots). If you can’t spot it, grab a full head of cabbage instead, and a few carrots
Apply a little seasoning
For an Egg Roll in a Bowl, everything comes to the simple fact – whether it’s sweet or spicy? You can use any of your favorite sauces or spicy seasoning blend to add flavor to this dish. Our favorites are:
For Spicy:
- Sriracha
- Fresh jalapeños
- Chili Garlic Sauce
For Sweet:
- Coconut Amino
- Liquid Stevia
Using a Hot Skillet
Using high heat to get some browning on the meat is necessary; otherwise, you won’t have much texture in the finished dish. Using the vegetables will make it impossible to place some color on the meat, so before adding the vegetables, make sure you have the beef cooked to your taste. You should also mix 2 tablespoons of chicken broth to keep the meat juicy, so there are no concerns!
Using meat with a high content of fat
If you are using a leaner form of ground meat like ground turkey, add extra fat. The main factor that makes this recipe unique is that the vegetables eat up both the fat and taste. You can also proceed to add a few tablespoons of excess fat if you plan to go for ground turkey or ground chicken.
Sesame Oil is all you need to make the difference
If this recipe includes one particular ingredient that you certainly shouldn’t leave out, it’s sesame oil. It is required to add it at the end to hold the dish together. It has an unmistakable taste of traditional Asian dishes that you’ve come to expect. Don’t worry about those sesame seeds as well! In the final product, sesame seeds add a lovely crunch and texture.

Ingredients
- 1 lb ground pork/beef/chicken
- 12 ounces cabbage (we used a ready-made coleslaw mix)
- 1/4 cup liquid aminos (or soy sauce)
- 2 tbsp chicken broth
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 2 tsp Sriracha
- 1 tbsp Sesame Oil
- 2 tbsp minced green onion
- 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
Instructions
- Start by heating your large skillet on medium-high heat. Add your ground pork once the skillet is hot. Use a spatula and break the large chunks of meat and cook it thoroughly.
- Pour in the liquid aminos and chicken broth. Stir it thoroughly to combine.
- Next, add the minced garlic, ground ginger, and sriracha(if you want it spicy) and then combine them. Let it cook for 1-2 minutes to soak up all the liquid.
- Add in 12 ounces of cabbage or straight coleslaw mix and stir. This will help in coating all the cabbage in the liquid and seasonings. Turn off the heat once the cabbage has wilted to your liking. For more crunch, combine and immediately remove from heat; for less crunch, cook for 2-3 minutes.
